新種の立方クラゲ カグツチクラゲ を久米島沖より報告すると同時に、同属のカグツチクラゲ属の一種をパラオ沖より報告

新種の立方クラゲを発表。本日、Plankton and Benthos Research, 21(1)にて、久米島沖で発見した立方クラゲ類の新称・新種 カグツチクラゲ (迦具土水母)を、黒潮生物研究所の戸篠祥さんと共同で発表しました。

本報告ではカグツチクラゲの幼体についても報告している他、これまでManokia属については、日本国内からは発見されていなかった事から、Manokia属を新称 カグツチクラゲ属としました。 カグツチクラゲ属は、立方クラゲ類の中ではとても珍しく、4本の触手のうち2本はとても短く、2本はとても長い触手を備えており、長い触手には沢山の側枝を備える特徴があります。カグツチクラゲの場合はその成体の側枝が甲殻類の一種であるカイアシ類にとてもよく似た形状をしてこり、これによって、餌生物を引き寄せる効果があるのではと推察されます。 本報告では同時にパラオ沖で発見した同属の未記載種 Manokia sp. についても、詳細に報告しています。こちらの側枝はオキアミによく似た特徴を持っています。

Manokia bandiera sp. n. and Manokia sp. (Cubozoa, Carybdeida, Alatinidae) bearing tentacles with lure-like lateral branches from Japan and Palau

We have described a new species of box jellyfish. Today, in Plankton and Benthos Research, 21(1), we published a new cubozoan species, Manokia bandiera sp. n., discovered off Kume Island, in collaboration with Sho Toshino of the Kuroshio Biological Research Foundation. The paper is open access. 

In this study, we also describe the juvenile stage of Manokia bandiera sp. n. Since the genus Manokia had not previously been recorded from Japan, we propose the new Japanese name “Kagutsuchi-kurage-zoku” for the genus. Manokia is a very unusual box jellyfish. Of its four tentacles, two are extremely short and two are very long, with the long tentacles bearing many side branches. In M. bandiera, these branches closely resemble copepods, suggesting that they may function help attract prey.

We also report in detail on an undescribed species, Manokia sp., discovered off Palau. The side branches of this species resemble krill.
